Playing Hostess

I like to think that I am a good hostess whenever we have people over for dinner or a short visit to Hubs’ garage brewery. The problem now is that we live so.far.away. from most of our friends and it really doesn’t make sense to travel 15 miles out of the city just for dinner 😦

Truth is, I’d like to play hostess more and test out some recipes on friends, so it’ll be worth the drive. Promise. 🙂
If you’re not willing to head east, I know a great hostess just north of the city who puts out a great spread and has a relaxing pool on a few acres of serene land.

hello, happiness.

Since I rarely play hostess, I’ve gotten pretty good at bringing items to other places. One of my favorite, super easy and crowd pleasing snacks to prepare is Puppy Chow. Amazing stuff, right? And it’s easy to veganize and de-glutenize(?), too! Although Chex brands their dessert-for-a-snack as “Muddy Buddies,” we all know where it’s really at!

Vegan, Gluten-free Puppy Chow

Gather your 6 ingredients

9 cup Rice Chex (or other crispy cereal squares)
1 cup non-dairy, semi-sweet chocolate chips (TJ’s are yummy)
1/2 cup natural creamy nut butter (unfortunately, I only had Hubs’ JIF on hand)
1/4 cup margarine (you could probably omit this to healthify the recipe a bit)
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cup confectioner’s (powdered) sugar
.

Put cereal in large bowl. In saucepan over low heat or in microwave-safe bowl, melt chocolate chips, peanut butter, and margarine. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. Pour over cereal and stir to combine.

mmm lick the bowl.

Finally, for the fun part! Put mixture into a large plastic bag with powdered sugar and shake well to coat. Dancing while shaking is acceptable.
Spread well-shaken mixture evenly on wax paper and allow to cool, if you can handle it…

The hardest part of this no-bake, quick and easy recipe is not getting powdered sugar and melted chocolate everywhere. Or maybe that’s just me. The actual hardest part is not eating the entire bowl of 18 servings before you bring it to a party. 18 servings my ass.
